We All Need Someone to Witness Our Lives
Apr 22, 2013Someone to tell it to is one of the fundamental needs of human beings.
Miles Franklin
Relationships take work. We must be intentional with them, cultivating them and nurturing them if we want them to thrive and survive.
In her article – Five Basic Human Needs – author and life coach Deb Melton writes about our need for relationships. She maintains that human beings have some needs that are best met by someone else, needs that we cannot meet just on our own. She quotes David Richo in his book, How to Be an Adult in Relationship, that there are five fundamental things each of need to sustain our relationships:
1. Attention
2. Acceptance
3. Appreciation
4. Affection
5. Allowing
Deb Melton uses our foundational quote by Miles Franklin to highlight her article. We invite you to read it in full. We believe that she has some valuable and meaningful points to make, points that all of us can take to heart and model better.
We all need someone to witness our lives.
So says Susan Sarandon’s character in the 2004 movie, Dance with Me. Deb Melton highlights this scene and writes that it’s even more. She’s right. We all need a witness, and even more.
